28 Days Of Dinosauria - 1

Or at least, that's the plan...! Spearheaded by corvidology, February is 'Things I Love' month. And okay, I don't just love dinosaurs. I also love sharks, and swords, and car chases, and things going "Boom!" Also tea. But first and foremost, it's always been dinosaurs. So:



Day 01: Starting with the best - my favourite dinosaur, Eocarcharia dinops. I've always had a soft spot for the carcharodontosaurids. Shark-toothed dinosaurs! What's not to love? (They didn't eat fish, it just refers to the shape of the teeth.) Eo dates from the early Cretaceous period, some 110 million years ago, in Niger, and the name (chosen largely due to a heavy brow) means "fierce-eyed dawn shark". That's cool even if you're not a dinosaur and shark obsessive. Although I don't quite understand why you wouldn't be.

I looked it up so I could visualize it. I really like the way a lot of the pictures have a human shaped figure next to it so you can judge the size correctly.

Yes, that is useful. There are some terrific dinosaur artists about these days too, both professional and on deviant art.

I also had to go look it up. I like how varied the pictures are, depending on how over-excited the artist was when attempting an impression. Also the ones that have grudgingly made efforts towards what might possibly be feathers. Or not.

"Fierce-eyed dawn shark" definitely sounds promising. I'm sure the Eocarcharia dinops lived up to its name.

The pictures of Eocarcharia dinops look fierce eyed indeed. I'm worried for the man who keeps standing next to it's jaws anyway.

He's clearly a moron. In some of the size comparison drawings I find myself wanting to yell at the silly idiot. This is a much better sort of person/dinosaur comparison. It was drawn by Danielle Default, a scientific illustrator from the Royal Ontario Museum, and features her as the human comparison. She has style!

Mind you, it features Zuul crurivastator, which was a herbivore, so it's less silly to start with. Still cool though.
