I just found this post, which I apparently wrote on August 6th, and have no memory of at all. I do remember [personal profile] lost_spook doing the poetry meme again, and me thinking what a good idea that was; but it's news to me that I actually did it! Anyway, it's a simple enough endeavour (and I recommend it). You write down five fandoms, and then go here, and write down the fifth line of the random poem that you land on - whatever it is, and believe me, there's some doozies. Then hit refresh a few times until you've got five. Use them as inspiration for a ficlet for each fandom. Usually you'll end up with at least four poems by Emily Dickinson, but try not to find it too disheartening. The internet has always been obsessed with her.

(Not posting for two months isn't one of the rules, incidentally. That just happened, for reasons. Mostly involving stupidity.)

Clocks ticked. So many clocks, lining the walls, ticking and tocking away the seconds of inexorable time. Inexorable, that is, for some. Crawling through the shadows, sonic screwdriver in one hand, a hotch-potch of home-made mischief in the other, came the Doctor. The Clockmaker sought to manipulate time; to twist it to his own evil ends; and the Doctor was the universe's best line of defence. One meddlesome Time Lord, and a great deal of improvising.

Clocks ticked. Time – and so much else – moved on. And yet, mused the Doctor, as she ducked a laser beam, some things never change.

prompt: #047 - shadow

Half shadow, half spider, it hung before them, all sharp spikes and razor edges. Blacker than space; a darkness well beyond anything in human experience. Light seemed to slide off it; to cower from it; to skitter away, and hide itself in places unseen. Ivanova could only sympathise. And they were to fight these things? These shadows that light itself seemed to fear? Beside her, Marcus whispered something in Minbari – a prayer, she thought – then flashed her a wholly incongruous grin. She smiled back. And why not? When light itself was afraid, what else was there to do but smile?

prompt: #024: Silence

Space was silent, so it was said. Londo Mollari knew the truth. Space was not silent. It screamed; it sobbed; it wailed with the voices of the dead and the dying. All those Centauri; all those Narns. Faceless statistics that he would carry with him to his own death – and maybe beyond.

Here at least there was silence, of a sort. Here in the Zocalo, in the constant din, the constant to-ing and fro-ing of so many thousands of lifeforms, there was a stillness. A refuge. Here, for a little while, Londo could hide from all that he had done.

prompt: #029: Quote V: "It was a dark and stormy night"

"Could that weather be any more horror movie?" Buffy stood at the window, watching forked lightning zigzag earthward, cringing slightly as an especially ferocious thunder peal echoed overhead. "And I have to go hunt demons. Isn't there, like, a good weather clause for Slaying?"

"Unsurprisingly not," said Giles, stake in one hand, oilskin in the other. "Sorry."

"Seriously creepy weather clause?"

"No."

"You're not helping."

"I am. I'm coming with you."

"Giles, no offence, but unless you're a fang-proof, waterproof snuggle blanket..." He looked typically nonplussed, and she sighed. "Never mind – destiny awaits. And my destiny is pneumonia; who knew?"
Keep meaning to mention a new community at DreamWidth, which I think may interest some of you. It's called [community profile] 100words. Each week (Tuesday I think) there's a new prompt posted, and the aim is to write exactly one hundred words inspired by that prompt, directly or indirectly. Can be any fandom, or original - whatever you like, as long as it's exactly one hundred words. So far it's proving to be quite lively, and there's been some good stuff posted. So come and join! :)

prompt: #028 - kairos

The cockpit had always been where he belonged, but it fought him more these days. Age endures discomforts far less readily than youth. Some things, however, need to be done. Some journeys have to be made.

The sun was rising. He had no idea which sun, nor which world it was crowning, but the halo of light was exquisite; his timing, as ever, without fault. He pressed the button, and sent the payload flying off into the dawn.

"Goodbye, Apollo." Watching until the casket vanished into the rising visor of flame, Starbuck turned the Viper about and headed for home.

For Richard Hatch, with respect.

prompt: #027 - rebel

They had never planned for rebellion. Thievery, yes – piracy, maybe. Blake had been the visionary, with his wild dreams of anarchy as salvation; but he had left them. Half of the present crew had never even met him – and yet here they all were, caught in the slipstream of his ideals. Five squabbling outlaws with the galaxy breathing down their necks, either awaiting liberation, or with designs upon the reward. A bewitching psychopath for a shadow, and inevitability chasing at their heels; it was all leading somewhere. Avon only wished there were some room for doubt about where that was.

The apartment was cold and dark, the steady creep of mildew adding its own special scent to an already heady cocktail of dust and damp, and rotting rubbish borne upon a pervasive draught. Crane sat alone, staring at his one, sole ornament – a photograph of Abigail Mills. Even here, in such different surroundings, her absence cut as deep as any physical wound. Nonetheless, he smiled as he looked at her picture. She was gone these several weeks, but somehow he still seemed to feel her beside him. Now more than ever, she was the light that guided his rootless heart.

Somebody – one of the Brittanys, he thought; one of his myriad lovers, at any rate – had once asked him about the preponderance of black in his life. The black suits; the gleaming black piano; the sleek black Corvette that turned so many heads in the City of Angels (the City of Fallen Angels, increasingly). He didn’t remember answering, although he thought that he knew what the answer was. Darkness – a deep, Stygian black – was his friend. So why now was there a flicker of light glowing inside him, threatening the familiar shadows that were all he had chosen to know?

So. Ten years ago today (it was a Sunday), the BBC aired the first episode of Torchwood. The first two episodes actually, as it was a double bill. Much of the country boggled at it, unsure quite what they'd just seen, but I fell in love. It was loud and fun and a bit ridiculous; okay, quite a lot ridiculous. It turned out to be just what I most wanted from my television though, and I couldn't let the tenth anniversary go by without some sort of celebration. A short story then, hopefully in the spirit of the fun, sensible-sci-fi-fan-annoying show that I fell in love with, ten years ago tonight. It's beneath the cut, and also at AO3.

Some time today I plan to begin a rewatch. I haven't seen seasons one and two in years, so it will be something of a rediscovery.

Earlier in the year, [personal profile] lost_spook posted a ficmeme using lines from poems as prompts of a sort. It looked interesting, but I had a lot on at the time. Then this morning I read that today is National Poetry Day. What better day to take out that old meme and dust it off? The rules are fairly straight forward. Write down five fandoms in alphabetical order. Go here. Note down the fifth line of whatever random poem you land on. Partner it with the first fandom in your list. Click refresh, and rinse and repeat for all five.

And good luck if, like me, you have a mild allergy to Emily Dickinson.
