2013 was the year of Roger Taylor's long-awaited (if you're me) fifth solo album, Fun On Earth. Absolutely nothing else happened though, honest. Well, maybe a few things. Television gave me Marvel's Agents Of SHIELD, and then amazingly didn't take it away again after a half dozen episodes. It's still going now, even. Or will be, once they've stopped pootling around with their mid-season hiatusing, and have given it back. It's fab. It's got Agent Coulson and a flying car.
What else? I mentioned Roger's album already, didn't I. Damn. It's very good. Lousy cover, good songs. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were still on tour, so possibly the reason I didn't notice much else happening was because I was busy stalking them on YouTube? It was fun. As a hobby I highly recommend it. (Look! Cover Me! No Surrender! Live from London in June! Hurrah)!
Um. Some other stuff happened. Maybe I should do this entry as a fill-in-the-blanks? I remember watching Hostages, which was hilarious. I still don't know if it was supposed to be. It was a one-off, which was just as well, as no way was it going to get recommissioned; but despite that less than sterling recommendation, if you didn't see it, you should. It was very, very funny. I especially loved the episode when [spoiler] got shot. Funniest thing I've seen in years.
The Beeb aired Dancing On The Edge this year. It was a mini series by Stephen Poliakoff, who has impressed me greatly in the past (Caught On A Train (1980); Perfect Strangers (2001); The Lost Prince (2003)), but this was just a mess. It was supposedly the story of a black jazz band in London in the thirties, but it turned out to be about lots of white people instead. It even had white people telling black people how to deal with racism, which really shouldn't still be happening on the telly in 2013. Soundtrack was excellent, mind. I bought it before the end of the series. Some lovely bouncy jazz.
And then the Doctor had a birthday. :) And there was feasting and merriment. Well, there was a film, with Ten and Eleven and Eleven-and-a-half, or whatever we're supposed to call him. Best of all was Peter Davison being very silly with Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy though. The Day Of The Doctor was fun, but The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot was demonstrably the best 50th birthday present ever. I hope we don't have to wait until 2023 before they're similarly silly again.

I think I've reached the point where, if I don't post now, I never will. I keep intending to post, but somehow it never happens. Think about it too much, and it feels like I've said everything that I intended to anyway, so why bother? That probably isn't the right way to play this game though, huh.
It has been an interesting few months (using the term 'interesting' in its most flexible definition). For starters the weather has been lending its own special hand. I've been looking after a neighbour's garden whilst she's been away, and that's been unexpectedly entertaining on its own. There I've been every evening, gallantly attempting to water her whatnots, with a gale force wind whipping the stream from the watering can in every direction but down. Seriously, it's like the Keystone Cops do gardening. I should probably have sold tickets.
Elsewhere, things have been virtually non-stop, one way or another. My father had a heart attack back in April - and, being a member of my family, he couldn't do it sensibly of course. Instead he had what appears to have been quite a serious heart attack without realising it. He therefore spent a week and a half gradually losing more and more energy, and getting more and more breathless, until my mother practically frogmarched him to the doctor. Consequently I've been doing even more for them than I usually do - which I don't mind in the slightest, but it all takes time. And also it means yet more gardening, which is definitely not my forté. Why does nobody ever want a bit of swashbuckling done? "I'm going away for a fortnight. You couldn't swing from a rope with a sword between your teeth every evening could you? Around seven thirty?" I don't know that it's all that much to ask. Anyway, they sent Dad home from the hospital eventually, with what looks like his own pharmacy, and every so often a nice lady comes around to check his blood pressure, and steal a bit more of his blood. I think it's for medical reasons, rather than just some questionable hobby. And I say "nice" lady, but I haven't actually met her. I assume she's a district nurse, and I usually expect them all to look like Nerys Hughes (and preferably ride bicycles).
So yeah. I've missed a whole hell of a lot of LJ and DreamWidth lately, although I have tried to catch up here and there. I'm not ignoring anybody, I've just been busy. On the plus side, I managed to swing an extra shift at work, which meant that I got to go see Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Hurrah! Turns out it was the first time I've been to the cinema since LOTR III, and in the meantime they've knocked down the old cinema and built a new one. So that was nice. Or mostly nice. Are they always so bloody loud these days?! During the battle scenes the floor was shaking so much I was half expecting to get evacuated. It was a jolly good film though, if perhaps not quite so much fun as the first one. ( Some minor plot spoilers here )
So yeah. I made a post! There would be the obligatory TV stuff here, but ABC axed Forever because they're cold, unfeeling bastards, and I hate them. Although they didn't axe Agents Of SHIELD, so I don't hate them as much as I might.
Um. I think that's probably it. If anything exciting happens, I shall probably be wrestling with something that I don't understand in my parents' garden, or crying forlornly over cruelly stolen television. Hey ho.

Day twenty-five, a show that you plan on watching (old or new). I was struggling a bit with this, until somebody pointed out to me earlier that Network DVD are currently having a sale, so I bought a serial that I've been thinking about getting for some time. It's called The Tyrant King, and it's a children's adventure serial from 1968, with a very contemporary soundtrack and a vaguely psychedelic look to it. It's been recommended to me a few times here and there, and Network were kind enough to lower the price to £5 today. So it's now on its way, and I will watch it at some point in the not too distant future. Probably, if I remember. It has a very funky cover, look:

Also it stars Murray Melvin, who Torchwood fans will remember as Bilis Manger, the mysterious, demon-summoning caretaker from the two episodes at the end of season one. Which is good. I liked Bilis, and have always thought it a shame that he never came back. Anyway, that's a show that I plan on watching. It's old rather than new (big surprise), but that new SHIELD series starts in the autumn, and I'll be giving that a go. So there's that. I have no idea when it will be, but probably October? Or September. Or something with a "ber" in it, anyway.
(I looked it up. Apparently it's September 24th).
