Well, that was unexpected. Not the future beastie. That was in the trailers. I mean the end. Hmm.

So, big future creature with spaced-out bat DNA. Humanlike level of intelligence. Doesn't bode well for future humans, does it! And Helen being all evil and manipulative, and a total bitch. Still like her, though. I mean yes, okay. Bitch. But on the other hand, at least she's not a simpering aggravation, like Claudia tends to be. So yay for Helen. Sort of.

And another gorgonopsid! Hurrah! Assuming it's not Stephen's, as it was quite some years before the original visit to the Permian. No idea how long they lived, of course. And am I making any sense whatsoever to anybody who didn't watch tonight's episode?! Whoops. Sorry about that.

Plot details, plot details, plot details. Big bad beastie from the future comes out of an anomaly, and proceeds to snack on whatever takes its fancy. And there are baby big bad beasties. And much growling. And why is it that the soldier boys never manage to do anything useful?! It's left to Stephen to save the day in one instance, and Cutter in another. And when did Cutter become such a dead shot?! Maybe Stephen's been giving him lessons. The pair of them give the distinct impression that they're up to something after hours... Anyways, off the gang toddles to try to find the anomaly that leads into the future, so that they can try to make sure that no other big bad future beasties slip through, only to find themselves caught up in their own immediate past. In episode one they found a camp and a human skeleton in the Permian era, and in episode six they find out that it was their camp, and poor old Captain Ryan's skeleton. In two minds about that. On the one hand... well, he was hellishly wooden, poor fellow. On the other... he looked so like Tip Tipping from certain angles that it was a positive pleasure having him in the show. And that was just the kind of role that he'd have played, once upon a time. Once upon a time... Anyway, it was a good twist, and it's still fairly rare for a regular to be killed off, especially in a family show.

And so back out of the Permian come Cutter and Helen, the former to return home, the latter to cause trouble galore, by merrily announcing that she once had a fling with Stephen. Pure spite on her part, to get back at Cutter for kissing Claudia. Then off she skips, back into history, to return to her prehistoric day-tripping. And who can blame her. And meanwhile Nick, in between gasps of shock and betrayal, suddenly notices that Claudia has disappeared. And it turns out that nobody has a clue who she is. Hurrah! The Simpering One has somehow been wiped out of history! Which leads to some interesting theorising. Did a future beastie lurking in the Permian eat something that eventually became a Claudia ancestor?! And if so, how many other thousands of people have also disappeared from history?! Will we ever find out?! There's a long wait until series two, anyway, so we may forget what we're waiting for.

So, a great episode to end on. Not my favourite. I think that one may still be episode three, with the mosasaurs. I'd be happier with the cliffhanger if we got more episodes. Half a dozen or so per year is just not enough, meaning long waits between series, and not enough time to build the story up in the first place. Nice twists tonight, though, especially concerning poor Captain Ryan. I really did feel sorry for him when he realised that the body he had found was his own. Not interested enough in Claudia to care a great deal about her fate, but I'm certainly interested to find out what's going to happen about that. And hell, cliffhanger or no cliffhanger, I'm still looking forward to series two. More giant reptiles! Hurrah!

So... best bit of episode six?! Doesn't take much thinking.
