Gosh, it's all go in the Holy Land; and it's rather a shame that the BBC in their wisdom decided to wipe tonight's episode. The audio remains, and there's always the telesnaps, but it hardly compares to watching the episode properly. I suppose I should take heart from the fact that episode three has been found fairly recently. There's still hope for episodes two and four. Look down the backs of your sofas, everybody.
So where are we, anyway? Episode one ended with King Sulky refusing to help get Barbara back, on the grounds that he doesn't much like the Saracens today - and at the start of episode two, the gang are trying to figure out a way to change his mind. In the middle of this, the Princess Joanna suddenly turns up. Oh look, it's Jean Marsh. In the not too distant future, she's going to be suffering one of the nastiest deaths ever shown on Doctor Who - but since that's not in this episode, or indeed even this adventure, I suppose I should shut up about that. But it is nasty. Actually, I say that, as I'd swear that I've seen it, but I honestly couldn't say if I have, or if I'm just remembering it from the Target. I don't recall whether that bit survived the cull. Bloody BBC. Grr.
Anyhow... You know, this is family viewing in 1965. So why am I getting the distinct impression that they're trying to hint there's something going on between Richard and Joanna?! They seem awfully close, and Richard can't compliment her enough. But enough of my warped mind. The Doctor manages to convince Richard that it might be worth trying to get the various kidnapped personages back, as it would be a good PR coup, or something. And also a joke on Saladin. I think. Bit unclear about the reasoning there, actually. Anyways, there's chatter about it maybe being a good idea, anyway, and then they have a chat about clothes. And really, why do people in stories always think that a woman with a hat on is a boy?! In no way is it possible to mistake Vicki for a boy, no matter what she's got on her head. Nonetheless, everybody seems to fall for her cunning disguise, and she's whisked away for some new clothes. Not sure why. I just hope nobody saw her changing, or that's one disguise up the spout. Whilst all that is going on, the camera beetles off to Saladin's camp, where Barbara is getting all settled in her tent, with a serving girl and some new clothes. There's trouble afoot, though, for the villainous El-Akir, who kidnapped her originally, is feeling hard done by. He has a minion kidnap her again, and steals away with her into the night. Or at least I think it's night. It's a bit hard to tell with some of these pictures. Back at King Richard's place, Richard and Joanna break off from lusting after each other long enough to discuss Saladin. Richard would much rather be his friend, as they've been sending each other presents. Aw. Well quit fighting, then, you loony. He blethers on for a bit about marrying Joanna off to Saladin's brother in order to bring peace, then has Ian get all doled up in some new finery. A special envoy has to be a bit more specialer than good old commoner Ian, apparently (even if commoner Ian does appear to have a two hundred foot long dining table, a suit of armour and a stately home in his possession); so Richard knights him, before sending him on his way. When he arrives at Camp Saladin, though, and discovers Barbara missing, he's rather concerned, and stares into the middle distance quite a bit. Barbara would probably rather like the chance to do likewise, but having ditched her captors (hurrah for Barbara!) she's left running up and down streets and hiding in shadows, and trying to stay one step ahead. When suddenly - gasp! - there's a hand over her mouth, and a mystery man appears out of the gloom. And there ends episode two.
Damn.

A boy, allegedly.

Sara Kingdom. Or Princess Sara. Or Joanna Kingdom. Or... Jean Marsh, anyway.

The gang discuss how to go about changing King Richard's mind.

Richard and Joanna. Possibly up to something naughty, or possibly not.

El-Akir. You'd never guess that he's evil, would you.

Barbara gets settled in Camp Saladin.

Ian plays dress up again. He rather enjoys this game.

Julian Glover looking all splendidly kingly.

Ian accepts the mission to go to Saladin's camp.

Arise, Sir Lancelot. I mean Sir Ian.

The Chamberlain. He seems to serve no purpose in the plot, but he does have a super moustache.

Ian and his new hat discover that Barbara has disappeared.

And Barbara is accosted in a dark alleyway...
Gosh. More later. :)
