Oh, pfft. What a swizz. All of a sudden - ping! - the Doctor's already at the retreat, and chatting to Mike and the strangely orange Cho-je. No reunion with Mike, no "Hello, old chap, how are you, sorry about frying your brain with my stolen alien sapphire, and inadvertently causing you to lose your career", etc and so forth. Just straight in at the deep end, with Cho-je spouting philosophies, and arguing about chief bad guy Lupton. No fair! I want a reunion scene. It's a nice scene for all that, with Mike trying to keep up with Cho-je's little pearls of wisdom. And doesn't Jon Pertwee have kind eyes. He smiles at Mike several times in the most endearing fashion. Oh, and Sarah skulks in the corner, being annoying. Try as I might, I cannot warm to Sarah Jane Smith. All she seems to do is pout and sigh, and do stupid things. Of all the companions to bring back thirty years later for their own spin-off, why choose Sarah Jane?!

*Sigh*

Okay, so we begin with a continuation of Pertwee's Gadget Fandango. Lupton has stolen the Metebelis Crystal, and the Doctor gives chase in a mini-hovercraft. Before his eyes, Lupton vanishes, transported by the giant spider that he sort of conjured up at the end of episode one. So off goes the Doctor to the retreat, led by Sarah Jane, presumably for a reunion with Mike that happened offscreen. *Sulk* Cho-je assures everybody that Lupton isn't up to nefarious naughties, which is very trusting of him, especially since at this very moment Lupton is off getting up to some particularly nefarious naughties down in the cellar. Sarah overhears his plans for added naughtiness, and sneaks off to the cellar to watch; then displays the frequent stupidity flaunted all too often by a certain kind of Who companion, when she manages to get herself inadvertently transported to the spider homeworld - which is, of course, Metebelis. Metebelis is the sort of world where Mike would fit right in, fashion-wise, so it's a damn shame that the Doctor leaves him behind on Earth when he beetles off in Sarah's wake. Actually, it's a damn shame anyway. Why not take Mike with you, you loony?! Mike is good. Mike is fun. Mike makes the Doctor look well-dressed. I suppose he needs somebody to keep an eye on the retreat, but he could send for UNIT to do that. Meanwhile the action shifts somewhere else, rather like it did in "The Time Monster", leaving me wishing we'd stayed on Earth. Metebelis is a boring place, with haughty spiders, and a boring sub plot about enslaved human colonists. Fortunately one of the humans is played by Gareth Hunt, though, so it's not all bad. Hooray for Gareth Hunt! Though not hooray for his terrible moustache. And hooray for Sarah Jane nearly being thrown off a cliff! Silly woman - she deserves it. The whole reason we're stuck on this blinking planet, instead of being back on Earth with Mike, is because she was a total berk down in the cellar. Whatever possessed her to stand on the symbol that Lupton was meditating with?! Didn't she watch "The Dæmons"?! And then she looks surprised when she can't reach out for the Doctor when she starts to fade away. Daft woman. He's been CSO'ed onto the cellar wall. Of course you can't touch him...

I should really try to be nicer to Sarah Jane, I suppose. But she annoys me, and I can't see that changing. Still, one thing in her favour is that she isn't as annoying as the cringeworthy Tommy, or the embarrassingly miscast Cho-je.

Where were we? Oh, right. On Metebelis. The Spider Queen has her minions seize Sarah, just as the Doctor turns up. He has a cool big fight scene, looking like a renegade from an ITC series, then gets zapped by a spider minion. Sarah has been smuggled away undercover of the fight, but the Doctor is out for the count. Whoops. See, you should have brought Mike with you. He could have helped out. Ha.

Tommy spies the Metebelis Crystal, which appeals to his magpie tendencies.

A spider. But then presumably you knew that.

Mike and the Doctor decode Cho-je-isms, whilst Sarah skulks in the corner.

The Doctor beams at Mike. Either he's proud of him for understanding Cho-je,
or he's proud of him for following the path of sartorial silliness. One or the other.

The Doctor and Mike wonder whether to bother dashing to Sarah's rescue.
I shouldn't bother, lads. Really. It's not worth it...

Sarah being a twit. Don't stand on the symbol!

An annoyingly familiar human from Metebelis, whose IMDb entry is bugger all use.

Gareth Hunt! Hurrah!

The Doctor, out for the count. Whoops.

Halfway point, then. All good so far, but I could do without the trip to Metebelis, I'm afraid. Even if it is always good to see Gareth Hunt.
