Oh, Jon-Erik. Of all the things that you could have been, why did you have to go and be adorable?
So, we're back with Voyagers!, and on the home stretch now. And this means that I've run out of episodes. It also means that I've run out of Jon-Erik Hexum, whch is proving to be rather more of a wrench than I'd envisaged. Yes, I know - I was bound to run out of episodes eventually. I don't want to, though, damn it! Just as Phineas Bogg, with his appalling name and his daft goofy grin, is great fun to go adventuring with, Jon-Erik Hexum is fun to watch. He always was. Still, at least this time I won't have to wait twenty-five years before I get to watch him again. I could meander here at length about fate being a bitch, but I won't. What's done is done, and Jon-Erik Hexum was dead and gone before I had even heard of him. I still used to want to be him, though - except with darker hair and considerably less muscle. And shorter. Quite a lot shorter, actually - I was ten. Now I want to be Phineas Bogg, even with the worst name in history to contend with. I've said it before, but one day I really must work on finding some achievable career goals.
Actually, screw that. My way's best.
Anyway, in the meantime, here's the illustrated guide to the last few episodes of Voyaging At Top Speed Through History Whilst Being Frustratingly Endearing And Rather Hard To Say Goodbye To. Yes, that is quite a cumbersome title, I know.

Oops, I accidentally knocked out Joe Louis Voyaging!

Surprisingly well-dressed Voyaging!

Waiting for Alexander Graham Bell to finish inventing the telephone is rather boring Voyaging!

Oops, I've accidentally fallen in love with the woman that Alexander Graham Bell
is supposed to marry Voyaging!

Pub brawl! Voyaging!

Oops, I got arrested Voyaging!
There's rather a lot of oopses this time, isn't there.

Another-sporting-event-episode-but-at-least-this-time-it's-not-baseball Voyaging!

The team. Ready to go again.
It's been a fun ride. The natural focus on American history didn't become annoying, even if the attempts to cover British history did tend towards the laughable. All was forgiven on that score with the final episode, though; a lovely sign of what would have been to come, had the studio not decided that all these time travel shenanigans are murder on the budget. An enemy of Phineas's attempts to continue Jack the Ripper's work, in an effort to screw with history. No daft Hollywood versions of British history this time, just a nice, fog-obscured London, and a great foe. Season two would have been brilliant. :(
I do have issues with one episode, though. 1x18 is about Joe Louis, famed American boxer, who socked it to the Nazis by being black, and able to batter their Aryan champion into the ground. So far so good. However why does television always feel the need to have white characters explain equal rights to black people?! At worst it's hopelessly patronising, at best it's just plain embarrassing. At least here we're saved some of that by Phineas's man-out-of-time characterisation. He doesn't seem to understand national divides, or colour or gender problems. Joe Louis was a walking equal rights message, though. One of the best ones ever. I really think we could have done without him getting a pep talk from a couple of wandering white boys. Yes, even when one of them is adorable.
Still, you can't stay annoyed with a show for long when it's got Phineas Bogg, most unfortunately named hero ever, at its helm. 1x18 is a case in point. Phineas goes to spar with Joe Louis, something that gets him wildly excited; and in a fit of pureadorability glee, he does a back flip from a standing position. Quite how a nine foot tall man built like Sylvester Stallone manages to do that, I don't know. But he does, and I'd challenge anybody to watch it without a silly grin.
Anyway, it's all over now. I shall whimper quietly in the corner, before embarking upon True Blood, the vampire show that all the cool kids are supposedly in to. I know nothing at all about it, except that its basic premise is that everybody knows about vampires. Sounds interesting, anyway, as they're usually a secret. Of course what I really want to watch is more Voyagers!, but I'm just a little late for that. Hey ho. There's no fixing history for some of us.
Just to end on an up note, however...

Fig 1: Jon-Erik Hexum.
Adorable.
Watch him bounce. :)
