Yes, I am going to wax lyrical about Voyagers! again. Torchwood is over for the forseeable future (be sure to make it even more of a hit, America, Canada and Australia. I want a season four). So for now we're back to Jon-Erik Hexum. Or I am, anyway.
There are many reasons for enjoying Voyagers!. The general sense of fun; the fact that the cast seem to be having just as good a time as I am; the wildly varying historical settings; the odd snippets of historical information; the guest cast; those brilliant costumes that Phineas and Jeffrey seem to find lying around every episode... It's the main cast that's the best bit, though. They're rampaging through history together, two guys having an awesome adventure, and loving every bit of it. It has a matey sense to it that something like Doctor Who, probably the most famous of time travel TV shows, has been lacking for a very long time - arguably since the days of Two and Jamie. Phineas and Jeffrey enjoy each other's company. They're best friends, and it shows. They lurch into hardship and danger all the time; they never know where they're going to end up next. They're having a rollicking good time in the process, though, and it would be hard not to share in that. The pairing of a boy and a man isn't always a good idea in a TV show - perhaps because you can wind up with a father/son dynamic, or perhaps because the actors don't always gel all that well. Jon-Erik Hexum would only have been about a dozen years older than Meeno Peluce, though. They're consequently more like brothers, knocking about through the centuries, and not thinking about danger. Not sure how the matter of age translates into the show, though. Phineas doesn't seem to have an age, any more than he has a nationality. He says to an old enemy that he would be "quite happy to go another couple of centuries without seeing you" at one point, which could just be a reference to time travel - except that he doesn't say it in the context of time travel. He says it on a visit to Voyager HQ. So is he hundreds of years old, like the Doctor? We're never told. If he is, that might explain his complete failure to understand much of society. Supposedly he is human, though. I guess we'd have found out more had there been a second season, but that just wasn't to be.
Anyway, they're having good fun. So am I. Here's part of the reason why.
All in the space of one episode:

Pirate cowboy Voyaging!

Pirate cowboy in a castle Voyaging!

Cowboy in a jungle Voyaging!
Seriously, who could refuse?! ;) Although there is one point when I had to stop and wonder. Episode 1x14 is about the attack on Pearl Harbour:

Cowboys on a motorcycle Voyaging!
Anyway, there's one scene where a technician is sitting at a radio, and on the wall behind him there's a poster:

It says "Make nursing your war job". War job?! What war? They didn't even know yet that the Japanese were going to attack! Talk about advertising early. :) It's the only real glitch that I've noticed, though (Robin Hood's England aside). And in the meantime?

All dressed up and about to sink on the Titanic Voyaging!

Truly ghastly turquoise clothing Voyaging!

Questionable headgear Voyaging!

Saviours Of History. Too cool for buttons.

Espionage Voyaging!
Beware. More will follow. :D
