Poetry meme

Earlier in the year, [personal profile] thisbluespirit posted a ficmeme using lines from poems as prompts of a sort. It looked interesting, but I had a lot on at the time. Then this morning I read that today is National Poetry Day. What better day to take out that old meme and dust it off? The rules are fairly straight forward. Write down five fandoms in alphabetical order. Go here. Note down the fifth line of whatever random poem you land on. Partner it with the first fandom in your list. Click refresh, and rinse and repeat for all five.

And good luck if, like me, you have a mild allergy to Emily Dickinson.

1. "He never misses a Degree—"
(From The Moon is distant from the Sea by Emily Dickinson).

Adam Adamant Lives!

Once, when we were dangling by our wrists from a set of rusty old chains, I commented to Mr Adamant that it was oddly companionable. Quiet and peaceful in the dark, if a bit dank and smelly. He gave me that look, all eyebrows and exasperation, as though I didn't have the sense to be scared. I did, and I do. All the same, I'm not too worried just now. He's here. I'm out of reach, so he's having to use a banged up old revolver that he took off a guard; but he won't miss. Of course he won't. When it really matters, he never does.

2. "Springing so forthright from the heart"
(From Ernie Pyle by Robert Service).

Doctor Who

"Is it 1981?" she asked, and an awkward smile fluttered briefly across his face; a nervous rabbit of a smile, in search of safety.

"1891." The numbers almost caught in his teeth, as unwilling to be said as he was to say them, doing their best to hide from sight beneath his tongue. She exploded then — almost literally.

"1891? Is this some sort of a joke? I— I—" She broke off, disappearing back into the depths of the TARDIS in mute fury, almost visible trails of flame following in her wake. The Doctor sighed. He'd get her there eventually. He had to admit though — privately of course — that when the day came, he would almost miss all that bright and brazen life. All that flagrant colour that was so uniquely Tegan.

3. "Then we hide our brave face"
(From We don't cry—Tim and I by Emily Dickinson).

Highlander

MacLeod likes to think of us as proud warriors, like the Highlanders of his youth. Me, I see the world differently. It takes a little courage, sure, to face another of my kind with a sword in my hand — but brains are a lot more important. Brains, and the dagger in my other hand. Any courage that we might display is a pretence. If five thousand years amongst mortals has taught me anything, it's that.

For Joe, it's all so different. We shrug off centuries, he battles years. As each one passes, our inescapable truths grow that bit closer. Shadows that hang over us, lengthening towards day's end. And where are my scraps of courage now? Or MacLeod's proud, warrior's heart? Joe's is a courage that makes a mockery of ours, and he doesn't even recognise it.

4. "If I should cease to take the names"
(From If I should cease to bring a Rose by Emily Dickinson). Jeepers, what's with all the Dickinson?!

Torchwood

A thin mist on the ground. Feeble rays of sun, clustered together as though for protection against the cold. Everything grey. Jack dug his hands deep into his pockets, and stared on as the grave filled slowly up. Another one. Yet another one, and it was still only 1938. If nothing else could kill him, then trying to stumble his way through the twentieth century just might.

5. "I forgive you for what you did not do."
(From My Friend, My Friend by Anne Sexton).

The Tribe

They had been the lucky ones, in a sense. Amongst the first to die, they had had graves. Gravestones even. Gone now, torn down by rampant gangs, run wild with the desire to destroy — but for a while at least, they had been there. Later there had been too many, too fast, and nobody left to do the digging. Bray stared out to sea, the only grave that he had been able to give Martin, and closed his eyes. All of them gone, and only him left. Some days it was so hard to forgive them for that.
