Challenger was my so-called Kennedy Moment, or that single traumatic experience that you know exactly where you were and what you were doing, for my childhood. Because I, like many schoolkids, was watching the live broadcast, and... well, I can ID that explosion off the contrails and smoke alone.
'86 sucked verily, and I can only thank the Bangles and assorted other pop stars for my sanity. And McCaffrey. And Heinlein. I discovered them both that year.
